Chocolate Slaves

Posted by chrisfox on June 30, 2008

The deadline has arrived for the chocolate industry.

JULY 1st 2008

The chocolate industry promised in 2001 to end the trafficking of children onto cocoa farms by July 1st 2008. They claim that they have done this but all they have actually done is gather some information about the exploitation of children from half the cocoa areas involved.

WHAT THEY HAVEN’T DONE IS END IT.
THE TRAFFICKING HASN’T BEEN STOPPED.
THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN IS STILL HAPPENING.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

STOP THE TRAFFIK collected over one and half million declarations from around the world and took them to the UNITED NATIONS. We know we can do something. That’s what STOP THE TRAFFIK is all about.

TOGETHER WE NOW NEED TO ‘TELL A MILLION’.

Many people in your local community still don’t know what is going on. How can we tell them that the deadline has arrived and that children are still suffering? We can use our local papers, local radio, and all the community newsletters, our blogs and facebook to tell a million.

On July 1st, people all across our town will be going out of their way to buy more chocolate—a chocoholic’s dream, but it will be fairly-traded chocolate. This is the best way and the only way to eat your chocolate slave free.

July 1st is a very important day around the world.

It’s the day when the chocolate industry promised to make sure that no children were being used as slaves on cocoa farms.

It’s the day when we could eat a bar of our favourite chocolate such as a Mars, Kit Kat or Dairy Milk knowing that no child has been used in the harvesting of the cocoa beans that went to make the chocolate we love to eat.

Sadly there will be no celebrations on July 1st.

Industry has failed to keep its original promises.

Today, children as young as 12 are still being used as slaves on cocoa plantations.

Here are the words of one child after being rescued from a farm. “I will tell you how I lost my arm. I tried to escape, but I could not. They caught me and tied me to a papaya tree and they beat me and broke my arm. I used to dream horrible dreams that they were beating me and about many other things: the hard work, my family … I still have these dreams today”.

Although the majority of farmers would not treat children in this way, there are some who do, and there are an estimated 12,000 children trafficked onto cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast into a life of slavery.
In our community, thousands of people are buying chocolate without knowing that these children are suffering for our sweet tooth to make fat profits for an industry that hasn’t delivered on its promises. In 2001 they said they would certify that farms were slave free. Now they are saying that they are gathering data on some of the areas where cocoa is harvested.

This is not what they promised.

This is not good enough after 7 years of waiting for the freedom, safety and protection of these children.

We have to choose which chocolate bar to buy, at little cost to us when our chocolate is costing some children their lives.

Fishing today…

Posted by chrisfox on June 28, 2008

I woke up this morning at about 4am this morning to fireworks (?????) exploding nearby. After a while of not being able to get back to sleep and not wanting to wake up my lovely wife I decided to pop out fishing.

Crazy?

Not really. I love sunrise and the early morning – it’s so peaceful and still… I’ve seen sunrise twice this summer and I plan to do it a whole lot more. I recommend it. I’ll probably post some photos at some point – I’ve tried to capture a few of the spots that I fish.

Only caught a couple of fish, although one was a large eel – my second largest I think…

I got back and cooked a nice breakfast for us both to celebrate our 10-years-since-we-got-together.

Huge fish eats duck

Posted by chrisfox on June 25, 2008

This is really amazing… you can hear the quack as the duck goes under. Make sure you’ve got the sound up loud though.

Preaching this morning

Posted by chrisfox on June 22, 2008

Just got back from preaching on Marriage (part of our sermon series on relationships)… used the passage in Genesis 2:15-25. Found it quite a challenge to speak on… if you’d like to listen or download it then click HERE

Incredible Hulk

Posted by chrisfox on June 21, 2008

HULK… SMASH

Watched this last night… I really enjoyed it. Fun, exciting, good effects, reasonably good story but not trying too hard like the previous Hulk film.

When Hulk did utter the immortal line I did really get excited.

Well worth the evening out…

Also, we visited a new burger place in the Brewery in Cheltenham – VERY nice… I had the New Yorker as well as the biggest onion rings I have ever seen. We’ll be back there soon…

First day of the season

Posted by chrisfox on June 17, 2008

Didn’t catch anything…

Saw the sunrise and sunset over two rivers (Teme in the morning and Severn in the evening)

It’s good to be back out on those rivers again…

Wine Tasting

Posted by chrisfox on June 14, 2008

When I was a “phone a friend” on that well known quiz show (just to remind you), we were given a Red Letter Day gift – evening wine tasting. We finally booked it in for last night (Friday) and we duly travelled up to that well known place of wine culture in the West Midlands - Kenilworth (????)

We had a fab time – drinking lots of nice wine (I didn’t spit once), eating lots of nice food, and to top it all off out of 60 people my lovely wife won the taste testing competition. The prize… we were hoping for a case of wine, but… a thick encyclopedia about wine tasting.

Ebay here we come

The Church makes me tick…

Posted by chrisfox on June 12, 2008

I hated church when I was younger. I sang in a choir in a large church from the age of eight, and if I’m really honest it pushed me away from church. I got confirmed with little or no understanding or, more importantly, experience of a relationship with God and this led me to exit sharply with no plan at all to ever return to a church. However, I did have the best choirmaster who also taught me piano, and to be really honest I would have left much earlier if it hadn’t been for him. Sundays then became fishing, sleeping, computer games, and TV days.

15 years later I’m going to train to become a vicar.

Why?

Because now I love the Church. Totally.

I believe in the church. Wholeheartedly.

The local church is the only hope for the world.

I’ve worked in the church for nearly 7 years. I’ve experienced a whole lot of awful meetings that are duller than anything you can imagine. I’ve seen church politics at their worst. I’ve been to some frankly terrible services. I’ve led and taken even worse ones. But I still love it. There are lots of Christians that I know who spend most of their time beating up the church, often for very understandable reasons. I share many of their frustrations. The Church in our nation isn’t in great shape in many places… but I believe that God hasn’t given up on it and nor should we. It’s God’s only plan to transform our world so I think it’s worth working for…

When the church works, she is the most potent, powerful, amazing, wonderful force for good. I’ve seen it. I’m still a follower of Christ because of her. The church is wonderful, beautiful, varied and unpredictable.

The church makes me tick…

New Labour and the Church of England

Posted by chrisfox on June 9, 2008

Couple of interesting links that are worth reading regarding a report from the CofE about how the government is ignoring the church provision of social care in different forms.

I don’t think this report takes into consideration the further contribution of the many other Christian denominations into this area either, which means that the government has missed even more.

To be totally ignorant of one of the largest providers of youth work in the country is incredibly arrogant at best. The church is so much more than a hatch, match and despatch factory. I know countless Christians who give up their time, money, energy etc in serving different projects from serving the homeless, providing financial advice, afterschool clubs, teaching people to read and much much much more.

If the government was doing a great job, perhaps they could afford this arrogance…

Euro 2008

Posted by chrisfox on June 7, 2008

I am bitter, twisted and English, and therefore couldn’t care less about the entire tournament.

However

I’m going to support the other totally overrated national team that never wins anything.

The Good Night

Posted by chrisfox on June 6, 2008

Utter crap. Watched 30mins before letting my lovely wife watch Home and Away. That’s how bad it was.

I’m happy to be told that the end was wonderful… although I highly doubt it.

1/10 for the bit we watched

My wife makes me tick

Posted by chrisfox on June 6, 2008

My lovely wife doesn’t like to be named on the internet (she likes her privacy!) so she who must not be named had to give me special permission to post this…

Here’s just some of the reasons why she makes me tick…

Obviously she has looks to kill, and a deep and profound personality. All that goes without saying… but here are some of the things that REALLY make her A M A Z I N G

An ability to know exactly when I’ve done something wrong even over the phone

She can cook the best food on the planet

She finds me funny (I think)

She is willing to come fishing with me for a month (for someone who gags at the smell of cod she is very brave)

She has fabulous taste in interior design

She ALWAYS overspends when buying me birthday and Christmas presents

She only makes me go to garden centres when we absolutely have to

She loves Dodgeball

She is cool and I love her lots

What makes me tick… God

Posted by chrisfox on June 2, 2008

I’ve been mulling this post over for a while now and still haven’t come up with anything that I’m happy with… so here goes

God makes me tick. I exist because of Him. In Him I live, breath and have my existence. He loves me and I love Him. God can’t be boxed, contained, controlled, tamed, destroyed, forgotten for long, fully understood or comprehended. He isn’t any of THIS

He understands me better that I will ever understand myself. He is with me even when I’d rather He wasn’t. He comforts me when I’m disturbed and disturbs me when I’m comfortable. He makes me think. He cares more about WHO I am than WHAT I do.

God is

God was

God always will be

He makes me tick…
